Anglo Saxon ruler of Mercia. He saw his kingdom dismembered by the Vikings and had to swear oaths to the Vikings acknowledging their leaders as his lord in order to preserve his kingdom.
The Welsh were a thorn in his side and he mistrusted the men of Wessex.
